The University of East London (UEL) marked a historic milestone when The Lord Sarfraz of Kensington was officially installed as the university's fourth Chancellor in a ceremony that drew together senior academics, business leaders, civic leaders, and the university's closest supporters.
Lord Sarfraz's citation was read by the United Kingdom's National Security Advisor, Jonathan Powell.
The occasion carried the weight of tradition while looking firmly to the future, as Lord Sarfraz steps into the role at a pivotal chapter in UEL's development. His appointment strengthens UEL's delivery of Vision 2028, the university's ambitious ten-year strategy to become the UK's leading careers-first institution, anchored in industry collaboration, sustainability, inclusion, and real-world impact. UEL serves a dynamic community of 40,000 students representing over 160 nationalities.
The ceremony was followed by the annual Friends of UEL Gala Dinner where UEL graduates spoke about their experiences, and guests heard from John Brock, former Chairman of Coca Cola Enterprises.
